Dreams of Weddings

Image
I once read that you eat first with your eyes. No wonder the best feasts are at weddings. Start with the decorations, the fancy clothes, the beautiful locations. I say you then eat with your nose. The various perfumes, the scent of the flowers, the heady smell of champagne and sugar. Then, finally! You eat with your mouth. Cake and other baked goods are always served at weddings, symbolizing the community’s wish that the newlyweds enjoy the sweetness of life through all their lives together. Famous costume designer Betsy Whitaker once said, “Fashion should bring us together, not shove us apart.” I think food brings us together, too.

Wedding Cupcakes

The cupcakes are to be part of a wedding for a couple who show the rest of us how to love. They always look at each other with tenderness in their eyes. Once, told me that their Beloved brought out the best in them, made them feel safe to tell all their secrets, and best of all, encouraged their outside interests. That last part heartened this baker. As I filled the sfogliatella with sweet cream and cherries, I imagined I was filling them with love and courage.   I want everyone to smile for two days after this upcoming union.

Chai Spice Cupcakes (Chapter One, A Dream of Words)

Try, if you can, to stay on topic when you bake. A slip of the mind can equal a slip of the fingers, bringing a (most likely) unwelcome creative opportunity. I had been frosting these beauties when negative thoughts caused me to lose the pleasure of what I was doing. As I lost focus, I knew this little treat would not taste as good as the rest. I had to let go of my anger and come back to it with delight. These spice-based cupcakes fill the bakery with the scents that warm the heart. I want everyone who eats these to feel like they are in love. This is what we do with food – we make the world safe for lovers and dreamers.
